Beginner workshops on Iona

Never tried bookbinding? Gie it a bash with a taster session.

During the main season I offer scheduled afternoon sessions in beginner’s bookbinding. It’s a great opportunity to spend a couple of hours with a few other interested individuals as I walk you through the steps to creating your very own book. They are held once a week, usually on a Wednesday afternoon, between April and the end of September starting at 14.00 and lasting for 1.5 to 2 hours. The style of book changes every year, allowing returning visitors to create something new each time.

Each participant will leave the session with at least one book that they have created themselves – and hopefully a greater appreciation for the craft of bookbinding, and maybe even the start of a new hobby / obsession.

No experience necessary, all tools and materials are provided.

Each session is a standalone event, perfect if you’re just on the island for a few days and want a unique handmade memento of your time on Iona.

Class sizes are kept small to ensure each person can be given individual attention.

Please note these workshops are not suitable for children.

These sessions can also be held by request for small groups outside of the scheduled times throughout the year. Please get in touch to arrange.

Visiting Iona

Not sure how to get here, or where to stay?

The Community Council have a very helpful website (welcometoiona.com) with directions and links for travel, as well as listings for many of the accommodation options, shops, and other amenities.

Iona is a small but busy little island. There’s plenty of places to choose from but it’s best to book well in advance!
